
The University of Chemical Technology and Metallurgy (UCTM) is a state university with over 70 years of history and tradition in engineering education. The beginning of higher chemical technology education in Bulgaria was laid in 1945 with the establishment of the Department of Industrial Chemistry at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering of the State Polytechnic. By decree of the Presidium of the National Assembly of 10 June 1953, the State Polytechnic was divided into four independent higher technical institutes, one of which was the Chemical Technology Institute with its two faculties – Chemical Engineering and Metallurgy, offering a total of 11 specialties.
Over the years, the university has established itself as the most authoritative academic and scientific institution in the field of chemical and metallurgical technologies not only in Bulgaria but also in the entire Balkan region.
Since its establishment, highly qualified teachers and scientists have worked and continue to work at HTU teachers and scientists have worked and continue to work, contributing to the development of chemical technology and metallurgical education and science, and supporting Bulgarian industry. Among them are the names of scientists such as Acad. Stefan Hristov, Prof. Lyubomir Zhelyazkov, Corresponding Member Chavdar Ivanov, Prof. Petko Nikolinski, Prof. Mihail Gerasimov, and many others who have contributed to raising the prestige of the University and to the international recognition of Bulgarian chemical science.
